George & Evangeline Sayles (Children not listed in order - only 6 pictured)
Anaise, George, Joseph, Emmanuel, Evangeline, Lawrence, Nicholas, Rosaline & Bruno Sayles

According to Father Bartholomew Sayles who resided in Collegeville, Minnesota who is now deceased his grandfather was a slave who escaped from Virginia and then settled in New Orleans. His grandfather had two children to his knowledge George Sayles (Father Sayles Dad and Laurie Sayles-Byer’s grandfather) and a daughter. Father Sayles says that his dad explained to him that his name was originally George DeSalle which was French but when he started school they made him use the English translation Sayles.

I located George & Evangeline Sayles in the 1910 & 1930 census records and I searched for George DeSalle and couldn’t locate that name from 1850-1930 in Louisiana but I did find George Sayles.  I am still actively researching this branch.
